Making room to push boundaries and shape the future.

Autodesk 1

Autodesk, the global 3D design, engineering and entertainment software company made two floors plus a unique street-level experimental space at MaRS Discovery District their new home. MaRS is an urban innovation hub focused on tackling key challenges, collaboration on and commercialization of discoveries, making it a perfect fit for the new Technology Center and headquarters of Autodesk Research.

The project, overseen by design firm The Living, used software that applies the principles of generative design to a workspace, using algorithms to determine all possible paths to your office goals. First, 300 employees were surveyed on the departments they would like to sit near and work style. Then the software generated 10,000 designs, exploring different combinations of high- and low-traffic areas, communal and private zones, and natural-light levels. Lastly, it matched as many of the 300 workers as possible with their specific preferences, all while taking into account the constraints of the space itself. COI collaborated with the project partners to execute furniture provisioning that fit their varied workspace and supports the cultural and brand requirements of Autodesk’s highly creative space.
